I'm proud to announce that I have finally cleared some time to get back to a far too long neglected project on CodePlex called Vertigo I have started back with a review of the as-is that Bernardo has left for me, added some work items for some immediate changes and bugs and am beginning coding agian. A new alpha release is forthcoming. We alreay have the labels showing in the tree and changeset detail available for each changeset node. This detail component is where the most work is needed. It's a bit rough around the edges. Also a few minor but important things l...

This entry points out an article on nine security policy settings related to how UAC functions. It also diverges a bit and talks about two potential presentations I may be giving at VS Live San Francisco. Follow the link below for the post. Special thank to Rocky for pointing this post out to me originally.

I finally got around to using Data Dude a.k.a Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals. All I can say is
DUDE!
This product rocks. I have to say I am exceptionally excited about adding this tool to the arsenal of tools we use in our development. I didn't know exactly what I may get from it but found it offers me great value. Very good stuff.

Don't forget if you are in the Boston area on Thursday, Dec. 21st (that's two days away from when this was posted) and have an interest in Visual Studio Team System drop in for the first monthly meeting of the Team System Public User Group. You can find the details at: http://www.teamsyspug.org/
This month the turn out is expected to be light owing to the proximity to Christmas and not spending a lot of effort on trying to really push this months meeting. Next months meeting is another story and the February meeting you absolutely must attend because one lucky attendee will receive a fully ...

Yes, I know that is a strange title for a blog entry. And I know I'll one day regret that when you Google 'booger' <cough> I mean live.com 'booger' (hmmmm.. doesn't have the same ring)... when one day you Google 'booger' my blog will come up. But then again as long as there are places like YouTube and MySpace <cough> I mean MSN Spaces there will be no shortage of higher ranking entries with the word booger.
Now on to why I titled this as such. I decided I'd cut and paste a section of an email I sent out today to co-workers some of who are in far removed places like Minneapolis ...

I'm sitting here listening to Sour Girl by STP on my new Zune (this year's fabulous Holiday gift from Magenic). I'm on the 14 day pass right now and will definitely be doing some exploring! :)
More to come on the Zune experience...

While toting my laptop between home and my client, I need to change the internet settings for proxy server and automatic configuration script. I had accidentally left my proxy server checked when I got home and then installed the Zune software. Naturally the Zune media player took the settings from Internet Explorer (you *ARE* on IE 7.0, right? :) ).
Becuase of this, I was able to view and search in Zune Marketplace, but could not connect to the media server. These settings are located under Options -> Playback -> More Options... -> Network tab, and then fi...

In Agile circles, the bogeyman of Technical Debt - that stuff you incur by not doing it right the first time, pops up whenever you talk about taking shortcuts in the development process. And most of the time, I would tend to agree. Fixing stuff once you are in maintenance mode often is a lot more expensive - especially major design flaws that cross cut throughout an entire application. For example, the cost to untangle the 1st and 2nd layers of a multi-tier application is often very expensive, perhaps in some cases more expensive than starting from scratch. The case ...

Preface: If you are from Magenic, you probably know this already.
Here at Magenic, we have this great class called “Magenic U”. A mix of acculturation, training, and boot camp, all mixed in one, the end result is that it gives you a great sense of what sets us apart from our competition. While a “great things about Magenic” could be covered in a different, very self-serving “fan boi”-ish post - this post is really about the most important lesson I learned at Magenic U, courtesy of Rocky Lhotka.
A big reason I was an “object ske...

Be a CIO, make a post about Agile, and use a waterfall diagram at the end.
Seriously, the article makes a very good point about what project sponsors really want out of Agile. The Agilistas (i.e. defined as anyone so blinded by Agile hype that they lose all common sense) - would do well to take note.

I'm proud to announce the first monthly meeting of the Team System Public User Group (TeamSysPUG) in the Boston Metro area. The meetings will be the third Thursday of each month. You can find more details at the website but not much more. I have yet to put up an agenda for this first meeting and considering that it is 4 days before Christmas I expect attendance may be pretty sparse but that's why we have them every month.
If you'd like to present, know of someone you'd like to come and have present, or have a topic you'd like to hear more about then drop me a line.
This is obviously just ge...

Have you removed a configuration entry lately? Changed a name?
Seems that VS05 does not handle this scenario well. Seems like it will actually throw "configuration system failed to initialize" if you remove a setting from your project - due to the extra setting continuing to reside in a cached user.config.
To handle, search for the user.config file that relates to your given project, and delete it (you may need to search your HDD, since it gets created in a temp directory). This will force an update of the file - which should have the correct entries according to your proj...

The inaugural Twin Cities Code Camp was yesterday at New Horizons of Minnesota in Edina, MN. I don't have the exact stats, but I heard there about 140 attended!
The facilities were first rate, Magenic provided plenty of pizza and soda for lunch, and the camaraderie was excellent. I saw .Net people talking to Ruby people talking to Java people; it really warmed the heart :)
I attended the following sessions:
Neil Iversen's SharePoint as a Development Platform
Jason Bock's State of Languages in the CLR
Robert Boedigheimer's Utilizing .NET Cryptography
Andy Morrison's...
