| 1. | | Back in the saddle again - Captured: 13-1-2005 14:15:00 Whew! It's been a while hasn't it? My new son was born 9/30 and I returned to work late October after infant care leave. We're all hard at work here getting Whidbey Beta 2 ready to ship. The holiday's hit and I spent a bunch of time on the road and on airplanes. I'm back from vacation now and sitting in a rountable discussion with VSIP partners at the January VSIP Dev Lab here in Redmond. Good suggestions and a lot of hard work getting partner products ready to run... From: AllenD's WebLog |

| 2. | | The Next Few Entries - Captured: 9-2-2005 19:04:04 For a time I had an internal blog at Microsoft for posts that were either only really internally relevant or contained information that wasn't suitable for public consumption. For assorted reasons I didn't keep it going, and the few poor people who were looking at it gave up, so when I moved groups most recently I decided not to try to put it back up.

| 3. | | Why Does Setup Make Windows Reboot So Much? - Captured: 9-2-2005 19:04:04 The short answer is: because memory mapped files are locked by the system and can't be changed while they are in use.
For the long answer, I want to go way back to how programs are run on a computer and begin at the beginning.

| 4. | | The Joys of CSS - Captured: 9-2-2005 19:04:04 I don't know the exact name of the group of people who hold similar XHTML + CSS views as I do (other than 'snobs' or 'impractical'), but there's not only a certain amount of style and simplicity to it, but practical application as well. This site's design is not as much a culmination of my CSS knowledge as much as an intersection between it plus my personal aesthetic.
The original intention of this site was to explore ideas around XHTML and CSS and web sites created with those plus the to... From: myShoggoth |

| 6. | | The 12 days of XSD gripes – Gripe 1 - Captured: 29-12-2004 13:29:00 Ok… before, I get started – a little background. I am basically now on my second dance with XSD. Back a couple of years ago I was working with it extensively as part of the SqlXml effort – particularly around the mapping technologies at that time. Then it was new – so it was cool. I knew it had some issues, but we were still in the courting period of our relationship. Then I took a couple of years off from actively working with XSD to concentrate on the O/R... Pam and I took a trip to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island for New Years. While
a bit cold, we had a nice time; a good dinner, time in a Jacuzzi, breakfast served
at our room (at the Tucker House), buying some artwork and seeing the island. We also
found a book that is perfect for our trips: a directory of weekend trips detailing
what to see when, where to eat and place to sleep.
On the 2nd, we had Misha, Rachael and Ben over for a salmon dinner. I used... From: Doubt's Log |

Had a pretty busy weekend, Friday night was the our holiday party, which was pretty
decent once my headache went away and I could enjoy the band. The Dancing Heads room
was especially enjoyable. They use green screen technology to get a video of just
your head and then overlay it on to a video of headless dancers keyed to a the playing
of a popular song. The results are VERY amusing.

| 11. | | Why Choose Microsoft for your Portal? - Captured: 14-1-2005 10:51:00 Whether you're a business or technical decision maker, it's important to think about what's important to your organization when making a software decision. For most companies, software is an enabler of business. That is to say, your company is probably not in the business of making/developing software, but rather using software to run your business. Since I'm most familiar with the Portal space, my remarks are specific to Portal software. Nevertheless, many of the same suggestions and concepts a... From: Arpan Shah's Blog |

The fact that we are able to respond to what customers ask for is very encouraging - I hope that this and other examples (such as Mikhail's) will help to create a positive feedback loop where we implement more suggestions, so people are more likely to communicate with us, and therefore we get more data, which allows us to even better implement suggestions, and so on. Anyway, the USGS has a set of really amazing photos of Mount St. Helens from the past few days. Well worth the look. I know that Workspaces started acting, well, tetchy over the weekend. I was actually online on Sunday and saw it happen, and started flagging the Microsoft.com ops folks at that point. | 16. | | Envisioning blogging without er, throwing up - Captured: 10-1-2005 15:39:00 Next week I get to do yet another presentation with Robert Scoble, Blogger at Large. It's always a pleasure because Robert is so darn sunny in his personality and he's a natural presenter - he digs that evangelism thing and can wing it on notes taped to his sleeve. I am of course more terrified and methodical, especially when ( as with the Webcast we did together) the audience is people who do evangelism for a living and present all the time. I made the normal protests ("I'm too hip and cool for this Spam business ") and then shut the <blank> up and tried it. It....was.....AMAZING. I couldn't believe it. Google has released a 20

I find it very interesting to see the history of the “world's largest BBS“.
Personally I got involved in usenet in 1989 or 1990. I was working for a bio-medical
manufacturing company, and managed to convince a local defense contractor to allow
us to tap a usenet feed off them. The feed came through our 1200 baud modem, with
