1. The Venting Game  - Captured: 23-1-2005 15:15:41
As all large corporations Microsoft also has a few execs who see little of what comes from their work. Thats the problem with living the 40 000 feet scenario continuously. On the other hand there are these others who have never understood that 40 000 above reality is pretty high and some greasy details never make it there. The problem here is misunderstanding. While the execs get news papers to communicate with the folks below 40 000 feet, the rest of the world never get...

2. Mount St. Helens Pictures  - Captured: 7-10-2004 15:33:00
Apologies about the lack of blogging over the past two months. I will get back to it soon, I've just been unfortunately swamped. Anyway, the USGS has a set of really amazing photos of Mount St. Helens from the past few days. Well worth the look. They come in sizes up to 650x400 pixels and so, and look terrific as desktop backgrounds. (Link) Update:
There are volcano pics from Thursday at the link above, I'd suggest checking there for more content. :-)

3. ASP.NET Connections  - Captured: 31-1-2005 13:49:00
In March, we are sending several members of the product team to lovely Orlando to speak at the ASP.NET Connections conference.  DevConnections consistently puts on one of most educational and entertaining regional shows and provides great access directly to industry experts as well as Microsoft experts.  I know I always learn a lot and have a great time at the connections shows - I definitely reccommend checking it out.  You can learn more at http://www.devconnections.com/

4. Meta Products Download Express  - Captured: 22-1-2005 8:28:00
Meta Products Download Express is a download accelerator for both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firebox. I have installed the add-in for both browsers. The installation was seemless and could be done when both browsers were open but you needed to close the browsers and re-open them to make use of Download Express's new features. Download Express certainly seemed to make a significant impact on the couple of files I downloading as a test. I was getting pretty much a 100% increase on download sp...

... in other words, which is easier to maintain? chunk = chunk.PadRight(4, " "c).ToLower                          --  Or  -- chunk = LCase(Left(chunk & Space(4), 4)) I'm converting (or rather resurrecting) some code from VB6 to build a library for some fellow .NET developers and am going through the process of porting various pieces over where it makes sense. ...

6. Geeking out on Bluetooth  - Captured: 4-2-2005 6:40:45
Now that I appear to have a cell phone that actually works, I have been enjoying a very cool feature. My phone is Bluetooth-enabled. Bluetooth is a short-range radio protocol that allows devices to communicate with each other. It basically creates a "personal area network" by which your various devices (phone, PDA, laptop, earphones, microphone, whatever) can talk to each other. Both my laptop and PDA are also Bluetooth enabled, so they can talk to my phone. ...

7. More cell phone fun  - Captured: 28-1-2005 18:42:57
Yesterday my newest replacement phone arrived. This is replacement number 3, phone number 4. To recap my fun thus far: Phone 1 locked up with increasing frequency Replacement 1 had physical damage, including the display not working reliably Replacement 2 had worn contacts and so didn't charge reliably, nor could it be connected to my computer (and Bluetooth wasn't enabled) ...

8. Is It A Distraction Or Procrastination?  - Captured: 10-2-2005 11:24:44
The New York Times has a very interesting article about computer distractions. There have been articles about this before. Thanks to computers and the internet, it's so easy to be doing something else, whether that's checking email, instant messaging, fiddling with your music collection, or just surfing the web. The Times piece focuses on the idea of getting people into a "flow" state and making sure that interruptions and distraction only occur when people aren't in a flow state. For exampl...

9. Blogging in Bermuda Redux  - Captured: 10-2-2005 22:18:38
My Bermuda blogvangelism trip was certainly a treat in many ways, not the least of which was how much I learned. One thing that is so humbling about these Read/Write Web technologies is that despite knowing some of them very well, there is so much yet to explore and understand. And having the opportunity to give workshops to motivated and enthusiastic teachers like the ones at the Whitney Middle School give me an opportunity to learn from them, which is half if not most of the fun. I feel very f...

10. Threading in VB.NET  - Captured: 10-2-2005 15:32:00
A few people have been asking me how to build threading into their applications to improve the applications responsiveness and/or perceived performance.  Rather then rehash what's already been well written about, here's a few articles that I suggest reading: Ted Pattison has done a series of articles on the subject for the Basic Instincts column in MSDN Magazine. Implementing Callback Notifications Using Delegates (Part 1) Implementing Callback Notifications Using Delegates (Part 2) A...

11. My Yahoo Subscriber Numbers  - Captured: 11-2-2005 22:57:23
After publishing our initial RSS market share findings a couple of weeks ago, we received a number of emails from publishers and other interested parties cross-checking our numbers and asking for further detail on our report. A number of these emails asked us to look into supposed anomalies, and we have followed up on all of these requests. As we double checked inquiries against our statistics, we repeatedly found that our numbers accurately reflected the data we were processing, but there was o...

12. The Cricket Club Café, Colpetty, Colombo 3, Sri Lanka  - Captured: 12-2-2005 16:01:00
Another pleasant evening in Colombo was spent in the Cricket Club Café (CCC) which we introduced to Ken, a Canadian, who had just arrived in Sri Lanka to work. Ken had contacted me via my blog , this afternoon, and we arranged to meet at the CCC at 17:30. Helen, my wife, and myself spent a very enjoyable couple of hours chatting to Ken and I hope he enjoyed it just as much :) Ken & myself had the Chilli crab which, as always, was excellent and Helen had Nachos which she enjoyed. 13. Flipping Coins To See The Future?  - Captured: 14-2-2005 9:08:53
How can you resist writing about a bunch of scientists who think they've figured out a way to (just slightly) predict the future? Found over at Slashdot is this story about a series of "black boxes" that generate random numbers and seem to go slightly non-random during big events... and sometimes even goes slightly non-random right before really big events -- or so the article claims. As you might imagine, there are a lot of skeptics out there, and many of them are found in Slashdot's comments...

14. Italian DJ Fined 1.4 Million Euros For MP3s  - Captured: 17-2-2005 2:02:04
While most of the stories about the recording industry cracking down on unauthorized MP3s focus on home users, it looks like they're checking out more professional MP3 abusers as well. Over in Italy, a DJ has been fined $1.4 million euros for copyright infringement. Police said that he had 2,000 MP3s and 500 music videos on his computer. However, what's unclear from the story is where these files came from. Were they files that he had made from CDs and DVDs he had purchased, or were they all...

http://www.everydns.net I've been utilizing the services of EveryDNS for quite some time now, and have found them to be extremely reliable. I would highly recommend checking them out for primary or secondary DNS services. They have four DNS servers spread out over the world, and best of all, their services are totally free! They do request donations to help defer the costs of operation, and I think that a donation is well worth the quality of service they provide. Enjoy. Jeff

19. Checking Back In On The VoIP For Life Folks -- Still Ticking, For Now  - Captured: 22-2-2005 20:36:34
A couple months back, some company came out with the gimmick of offering VoIP for life for $1,000. You can assume, of course, that the "for life" part is more likely to refer to the life of the company, rather than the customer. In fact, as we noted at the time, this company now has the incentive to sign up a few customers, and then quickly go out of business, because those customers all become a liability. It appears, however, that the company has convinced about 400 people to sign up, though...

21. Gotdotnet, the uptimes and the downtimes - which is Feb 28th to be precise  - Captured: 27-2-2005 18:58:00
Hi all, I'm blogging this on the eve of our next Workspaces code drop: some performance fixes, a couple interface tweaks having to do with the FAQ, a subtle Gotdotnet home page change, and a majority of the bugs you've seen in Workspaces (knock on formica) nailed. Because we did not manage to make the January drop due to angry hardware, and that set back our timeframes, this February drop does not nail ALL the Workspace bugs as we had hoped. However, at this time tomorrow, we hope you will see t...

22. Everybodys favorite topic - NULL  - Captured: 28-2-2005 14:18:00
In V1 of .net, value types could not be null.  Since, this was contradictory to relational databases use of null, the DataSet needed to have a concept of nullable value types – hence DBNull was invented.   DBNull is simple type in the System namespace.  It does not have a constructor, but a static method (DBNull.Value) that returns a singleton instance of the class.  Even though it is designed to support relational database scenarios, it does not support 3 part logic. ...

24. ChoicePoint Sold Info To Scammers In The Past Without Disclosing  - Captured: 3-3-2005 2:23:57
Since ChoicePoint has been getting tons of attention for handing out personal info to a bunch of scammers without actually checking their backgrounds, the company has been pleading with the public that they've learned their lesson and will be changing their policies. However, the news is coming out today that ChoicePoint was caught doing the exact same thing a few years ago -- leading to a number of identity theft problems. Apparently ChoicePoint didn't learn their lesson that time. The diffe...

25. Check Out An Audio Book On An iPod  - Captured: 4-3-2005 2:24:15
Rather than checking out tapes of audio books, one library in NY (total random aside: it's a library I used to go to quite often growing up) has apparently started offering patrons an iPod Shuffle with the audio books on them already. They had looked at offering books-on-iPods before, but they were too expensive. The cheaper Shuffle is apparently perfect for holding a single book. In fact, the library says it saves them money, since the electronic versions of the audio books are much cheaper ...
