1. Getting out of town for new years  - Captured: 4-1-2005 18:46:19
Pam and I took a trip to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island for New Years. While a bit cold, we had a nice time; a good dinner, time in a Jacuzzi, breakfast served at our room (at the Tucker House), buying some artwork and seeing the island. We also found a book that is perfect for our trips: a directory of weekend trips detailing what to see when, where to eat and place to sleep. On the 2nd, we had Misha, Rachael and Ben over for a salmon dinner. I used...

2. Working from home and a nice dinner  - Captured: 30-12-2004 22:05:06
Been working at home all week, which has turned out pretty well. I don't think I'll have house fever before our trip this weekend. I got in one bike ride from Tracy Owen park to Redmond because it looked like a sunshiny day. Unfortunately most of the ride was in a cold fog and I popped an inner tube after running into some glass. I met some nice folks and learned that a lot of people use a ~15 mph pace with an early start and a pace line to do STP in one day. I...

3. Hanukah and Biking Weekend  - Captured: 13-12-2004 22:55:56
Had a pretty busy weekend, Friday night was the our holiday party, which was pretty decent once my headache went away and I could enjoy the band. The Dancing Heads room was especially enjoyable. They use green screen technology to get a video of just your head and then overlay it on to a video of headless dancers keyed to a the playing of a popular song. The results are VERY amusing. Saturday I woke up and joined a cascade cycle ride for what should have been a 40 ...

4. Weekend Update  - Captured: 7-12-2004 0:26:51
Decent weekend, Friday night was dinner at Mediterranean Kitchen and some shopping at the Bon. Saturday we went to Keshav and Kerrie's pre-Christmas party. Unfortunately I slept through the first part of it, but I did get to play a bit of halo 2 co-op and watch Keshav show off the new Grand Theft Auto game. Sunday, pam and I went on an 8 mile bike ride through a small snow storm, meeting our ride leader Ted. Pam's phone didn't survive the trip. We did a bunch of chores around the house, finally ...

5. Why Choose Microsoft for your Portal?  - Captured: 14-1-2005 10:51:00
Whether you're a business or technical decision maker, it's important to think about what's important to your organization when making a software decision. For most companies, software is an enabler of business. That is to say, your company is probably not in the business of making/developing software, but rather using software to run your business. Since I'm most familiar with the Portal space, my remarks are specific to Portal software. Nevertheless, many of the same suggestions and concepts a...

6. I got a new SmartPhone  - Captured: 27-1-2005 20:29:00
I got myself an Audiovox SMT5600 smartphone today. This thing is amazing. It syncs to my outlook server for mail and calendar. It has IE on it. I can play movies and music on it. It came with all the cables to sync up to my computer like a PDA. And it is very snappy to use. Screen is a good resolution too. And you can use it like a phone without any hassles. Where will these things be in 5 years? The fact that I could compress 10 DVDs onto a card and play them on my phone is amazing to me - I di...

7. Gotdotnet: a suspicion that weve created a life form  - Captured: 28-1-2005 13:02:00
So I don't normally inflict more than one blog post on you guys per week, but I feel I owe it to the greater Gotdotnet community to talk more about the site's ups and downs this week.
I joke around with people with dark humor - especially the old Gotdotnet team who know the site well - about how sneaky the site is. If there's a server or application problem, it usually shows up ....

9. Not for the fainthearted or symbol-minded  - Captured: 2-2-2005 20:10:22
I never really got into the whole conspiracy theory thing.  For instance, I’ve never seen even a single full episode of The X-Files.  For one thing, I already had enough T.V. to watch, for another, David Duchovney (or however you spell it) always seemed like kind of a dick.  And I found it annoying how every other woman on the planet seemed to think he was hot, when I looked and looked, and just saw a scrawny, too-full-of...

10. A is for Academic Excellence  - Captured: 30-1-2005 22:17:22
Like many compellingly outrageous topics on education I’ve had brought to my attention, this one was found at Ernie’s 3-D Pancakes.  Here is an article on the subject…and another.   The thrust of the story is, this 17-year-old kid wanted to get into an honors math course at his high school, and as a condition of admission into this class he has to complete three very difficult calculus problems over th...

11. Girls Night Out  - Captured: 29-1-2005 9:24:52
Girl’s night out last night.  I went out with my friends Sue and Denise.  I was DD.  We went to O’Donovan’s Pub in Minneapolis .  This is where we go to watch rugby.  When there is no rugby, we drink.  Guiness.  No cute guys were around for the single chicks in the group to flirt with.  For some reason, someone threw a quarter at us as we were getting up to leave the table.  Freaks.&...

12. Drill Sergeant Voice  - Captured: 28-1-2005 20:15:11
Oh Lordy!
I had to use my drill sergeant voice today.

Now, normally, I am into the whole pro-active discipline thing.  My kids are
very sensitive and spirited, so I try to minimize disruption, stick to a
schedule, keep things predictable and consistent...use reminders and
re-direction...etc.

13. Programming languages with .NET implementations  - Captured: 16-10-2004 21:41:00
Yesterday, an inquiry came up internally over e-mail about whether a .NET implementation of the PL/I language existed. This caught my eye because PL/I was the first language that I encountered on a mainframe (at the University of Toronto, from whom I have a piece of paper ascribing that my "higher learning" took place there - occasionally, possibly, somewhat). I wasn't particularly fond of PL/I but it was my first mainframe language. Actually, to be entirely accurate, it was really SP/k - a ser...
