Another day before New Year's, another set of predictions. This time they're from Virgin Mobile Canada's "It" Team, which is allegedly made up of a bunch of twentysomethings. Here's their list of The Biggest Trends for 2007 (in Canada anyway):
10. Reality TV Gets Real - A new breed of show will emerge, enticing skinny celebrities to gain weight and do something that makes a difference for the world rather than their next photo opportuntiy
9. Divorce Rates Drop Dramatically - For the first time ever in Hollywood, the divorce rate declines due to the focus of celebrity couples on adoptin...

It's a s-l-o-w newsday. Here's another list for all you Ypulsers stuck at the office. It's from the trendspotters at ad agency JWT Worldwide -- a lot of these "things" seem pretty obvious but I'm bolding the ones I think are interesting. From the press release:
1. Skype/VoIP
2. Wii and the next-generation gaming systems
3. The business of social networking
4. Pop-up stores, restaurants and bars ... installation style
5. Shrinky Dink technology (TVs are flat and hidden, iPods are down to half an ounce, speakers are smaller and less visible, and so on)
6. The rise of na...

J Lo's version of 'So You Think You Can Dance' (here's a trailer from Jenny's new reality series "Dancelife" set to debut on MTV in 2007...it makes me want to dust off my legwarmers and jazz shoes) (via TV Squad)
- Sony uses ultrasonic ringtones to promote 'The Messengers' (first it used in the UK to drive teens away, then they began using it to get calls or texts in class, now mar...

T'is the season for endless year in review posts and lists. Since I already attempted my own last week, today I'll post a nice gem I found in the Contra Costa Times written by Brian Mertens and Victoria Conlu from The Times' Life in Perspective board, which is made up of local high school journalists who write stories, opinion columns and reviews. Brian Mertens is a senior at El Cerrito High School. Victoria Conlu is a senior at Deer Valley High School. It definitely has a Bay Area bias, but I think it's offers a little bit of insight into what teens thought was the best and worst in pop c...

Wow. What a year. I'll never forget how terrified I was when I clicked the "publish" button in May of '04 and launched this little blog called Ypulse. It's funny because the original vision and focus of this blog hasn't changed at all over the past 2+ years -- it has stayed true to the tagline on the site:
Ypulse provides daily news & commentary about Generation Y for media and marketing professionals.
People ask me all the time who reads Ypulse -- potential advertisers, partners and journalists. The bright teen girl friendly colors lead a lot of people to believe the site is for teens...

They don't do windows (Abercrombie is too cool for window displays) (The Patriot Ledger)
- 'Xena' the warrior girl gamer (Wired article about 15-year-old pro gamer Bonnie Burton)
- Pop goes religion (another story on how religion is absorbing pop culture to make its message relevant) (Eagle Tribune)
- 'Spring' not 'Awakening' box office yet (I think it's going to be tough a tough sell to get teens and parents to watch musical numbers about s-e-x together) (Bloomberg)
- Nipping at MySpace's heels (the runner-up social networks trying to unseat MySpace as the number one site for teens) ...

I was at a holiday party the other night listening to a 23-year-old college dropout and "natural search" superstar tell me how important having an entry in Wikipedia is in driving "natural" traffic to your site. I flinched a little, because a) it feels so self promotional, and while I do promote myself because I have to as part of building up Ypulse, I still cringe when it feels blatant and b) I'm not sure if I'm worthy of an entry although I feel Ypulse is. So given the Wikipedia mantra of don't add entries about yourself or your business, I thought I would ask my readers: If you think Yp...

People often try to reclaim words that have a lengthy history of negative connotations and turn them into something positive. It has happened with the N word in African American circles, the word "bitch" and even the C word in feminist circles. I think it's an uphill battle outside of these small circles where everyone is on board with the reclamation. There is an unlikely entrant into this phenomenon. It's not an academic or an activist -- it's ABC. Yes, the television network that airs this season's hit "Ugly Betty."
I watched the first two episodes of "Ugly Betty," and thought it was ...

I am coming to the belief that these days, every consecutive year is continually the most exciting year in music history. I'm not joking, either. I believe Millennials are coming of age and driving revolutionary changes in music akin to the 1960's – from the very business model, to how its discovered and shared, to how it's played. And this year in particular, we saw Tween influence reach new levels.
But where last year I concluded it was a "big, diverse and turbulent year for music," I'd say this year is more marked by steady (if slightly shaky) evolution and sophistication, both in bus...

Donald Trump has given us the ultimate Christmas reality show by offering Miss USA a second chance to keep her title. We had tears, and an upcoming trip to rehab to cure her of "underage drinking." Maybe they'll even send her to Refuge to cure her of any desire to kiss other girls. Personally, I think the whole pageant culture is ridiculous and wish an adult version of Olive from "Little Miss Sunshine" would have taken the tiara instead of a young woman raised on the pageant circuit, collecting donations from her small town shops so she could wear evening gowns and tape her breasts into pl...
